I would like to propose to use topology 3, i.e. donut world. This is more impartial because it is homogeneus, whereas in flat earth it makes a big difference to be on the center or in the edges. With donut world every player is at the center of the world and can interact more easily with the other players

If you haven't good allies, you would be stuffed even outside the strip.
yes to donuts in freeciv, no
yes to donuts in freeciv, no to the junk-food ones :)
My startpos in LT11 is on a strip . It's quite disadvantageous early on - cities get big corruption... if I didn't hav good allies, i'd be stuffed... so, donut is definitely fairer..
Those strips of land on the
Those strips of land on the west and east side make no sense at all. Or is it a feature and not a bug? :-)

Yes : Let's make LT13 a DONUT world.
And we could invite Homer Simpson to sing us "Spider-pig, Spider-pig..."
And every player would build a city named Springfield with no growth but a big nuclear plant.
...What a wonderfull world this would be :-)
Seriously, I prefer donut worlds.
I agree with MrSynical,
I agree with MrSynical, although clearly I noticed this discussion much too late ;) But it's good to discuss this for LT13.
In LT7 and earlier games a completely wrapped world worked perfectly. There will always be relatively isolated places and highly populated places, but we didn't have players hidden away in a corner of the map with 'black emptiness' at two of their borders.
Another issue that we have to solve is these strange polar regions or 'strips' of land at the edges of the map. People are marrooned there with very little land and almost no possibilities for interactions with other players. It's the unexpected consequence of altemperate (making the poles / glacier areas habitable) with a generator that for some reason creates 'north pols' and 'south poles' at the east and west side as well.

My preference is donut world to balance out everybody's game (same reason we have same terrain everywhere). It means that people in corners are not playing a different style game than the non-corner people and have the same oportunities to attack/defend.
I believe we did something like this in LT7 and I thought it worked okay. Can LT7 people comment? before a poll is setup?
Assuming you ally with people close to you, other groups will still be East/West/North/South of your particular grouping.
Why? Because our maps are
You can disable recentering of the minimap for wrapped topologies in local options if you are using warclient. I added this long ago to quell mmm's crying about not being able to orient on topo3. :P
Coordinates and continent/ocean numbers are still fixed though.

As I don't play in LT12, my voice is meaningless. But I strongly discourage donut topology.
Why? Because our maps are big enough, to be a bit lost with them. And if you additionally wrap in some direction, you don't know where is what :).
And last but not least, with wrapping you can't say that someone is "western alliance" or sth like that.
